THE CATHEDRAL IN THE TIME OF LEONARDO

In order to join the celebration for the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano aims to share a fundamental and fascinating moment in its history: when the Tuscan genius committed himself to the working site of the Cathedral.
At the end of the 15th century, the Duomo working site witnessed great projects, huge challenges, artistic and musical experiments, representing a forge of extraordinary ideas in many fields, a sign of the Renaissance fervour, which at that time was widespread across all of Italy. The city’s beating heart, every detail in the Cathedral echoed the tension between a new age which was about to be born and the robust traditional backgrounds.
Indeed, Leonardo spent many years in Milan, capital of the Sforza Duchy, and was concerned with, amongst other things, the then under-construction religious complex. He studied and elaborated some architectural solutions for the Tiburio of the Duomo, even if they never materialised. Documents of this commitment are preserved in the accountancy records in the Veneranda Fabbrica Archive, while some of his sketches and projects are guarded in the Codex Atlanticus and in the Manoscritto Trivulziano 2162.
Following a path featured by the sharing of knowledge, as was usual at that time, he developed relationships with the most important people in the local cultural life, such as Franchino Gaffurio, Master of the Music Chapel of the Duomo and first cantor of the Duchy Chapel, who created the three monumental Codices Gaffurienses, true musical masterpieces of the Renaissance.
To celebrate this important occasion, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo aims to organize different initiatives, able to pay homage to the great artist and inventor and to his multifaceted genius through the many languages of art.
